Growing Your Food

While I’ve long been preaching to people about the virtues of raising your vegetables in a backyard garden, my recommendations for what to plant have often been confined to the rather small and ordinary.  For example, I’ve suggested growing green beans and tomatoes, different kinds of lettuce as well various forms of squash, onions, and herbs.  However, I’ve never been so adventurous as to suggest planting corn at home; that is of course, until now.  I recent planted a few rows of corn in my backyard and I’ve been amazed at how quickly they’ve grown and just how tall they’ve gotten in such a short time.  While you might think growing corn would require a farm or a large open field, the reality is that this hardy crop will grow virtually anywhere and requires relatively little attention once it starts growing.
